Hard
disks drives
The
PC has made rapid advancement and hard disks drive have improved
steadily. Also the price of the hard disks drive continues to decline.
The hard disks drive capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB). Today's
applications be it games, multimedia, Internet downloads or today's
latest Operating Systems, all require fast, reliable and storage
solutions. So choosing a good hard disks drive is very important
that you don't have to plug in another hard disks drive in the nearby
future. So let's get on to some buying tips. You
can see the huge range of hard disks drives from our WORLD TRUSTED
Merchant.
You
will need a big drive if you plan on using a large range of software.
Games
especially take up a great deal of space. If you plan on installing
a few of the latest games then get a hard disks drive of at least 20 gigabytes.
The
speed of your hard disks drive is also important. A slow hard disks drive takes
a long time to load the Operating System on start up. In fact the
loading time of every program you use will be slow. The capacity
you want totally depends on you. You can generally get a good idea
of a drives speed by simply looking at three specifications.
1.
Disk Interface Speeds
This is the transfer speed of your hard disks drive. Disk Interface
Speed is the speed at which the hard disks drive communicates with the
other components of the motherboard.
Ultra-320
SCSI 320 MB/sec
Serial ATA 187 MB/sec
Ultra-160 SCSI 160 MB/sec
ATA/133 133 MB/sec
ATA/100 100 MB/sec
Ultra-2 Wide SCSI 80 MB/sec
ATA/66 66 MB/sec
Ultra Wide SCSI 40 MB/sec
ATA/33 33 MB/sec
The interface speeds are comparable, with SCSI being generally faster,
but those speeds are only the theoretical speeds because the real
speed of the hard disks drive is concerned only with the rotational speed(you
will learn about it later in this page). The speed that a disk can
actually transfer bytes on a sustained basis is lower, maybe 45
MB/sec for current disks. Also, some chipsets have problems with
high transfer rates too.
Besides,
is the hard disks drive speed even that important? If your system
has enough memory, you don't need real fast disk access. Furthermore,
there are the mechanical issues - heat, noise, and reliability.
I actually prefer disks that spin slower, because in general they
run cooler and quieter and I think that makes them less likely to
fail. While the current standard seems to be 7200 RPM and you can
get high-end disks that spin at 15000 RPM or even faster, I prefer
5400 RPM disks from a year or so ago. Given that, the latest ultra-high-speed
interfaces are not necessary - for 5400 RPM disks, anything faster
than ATA/33 is recommended. And actually, if you look at the specs
for 7200 RPM disks, you'll find that their maximum sustained transfer
rates either fit into or barely exceed ATA/66. So don't bother much
about disk interface speed, just look for a hard disks drive which
has ATA/66 or more of it. So if the interface speed isn't actually
that important, we're left with price, and prices on EIDE disks
are much lower than the equivalent SCSI drives

2.RPM 5400/7200/10,000/15,000
(platter rotation speed)
This
is the speed at which the metal disks inside the hard disks drive rotate.
Faster rotation speeds make for much faster drives. 5400 RPM is
the most common speed today but the numbers of 7200 RPM drives are
slowly increasing.
Get
a 7200 RPM drive if you will be working with big files or if you
don't like waiting for things to load. The drive above would be
great for heavy duty picture editing, music production or audio
and video encoding. This should be basis your decision. Faster the
drive, better the performance. My PC has a 40 GB 7200 hard disks drive of Seagate brand.
There are hard disks drive having 10000 or 15000 rpm rotational
speeds but you should not even think about them because they are
made only for Server Computers and are much expensive.

3.Brands
You
should look for hard disks drive of Seagate and IBM brands but Maxtor and
other brands would give the same performance. But the main thing
to look for here is which brand gives the best warranty in case
something goes wrong. If the price of same specification hard disks drive
have huge price difference and the warranty period also is good
then consider buying the lesser priced hard disks drive.
