Computer Memory
Computer
Memory or RAM is a place where all the applications beside the
OS(Operating System) are temporarily held while the computer is
on, and the computer memory gets erased when the computer is switched
off or restarted.
There are three types of computer memory in use today. In recent
years the price of computer memory have certainly dropped and the
performance has rised. Click
here to have a look at the unbelievable prices for Computer Memory.
1.
DDR SDRAM
DDR
or Double Data Rate computer memory chip started to show up in 2001,
and it is the new standard. These type of computer memory comes
in 184-pin DIMMs.
DDR
computer memory chip comes in a number of different speeds:
PC3200
(DDR400), 200MHz DDR, 3.2 GB/s
PC2700 (DDR333), 167MHz DDR, 2.7 GB/s
PC2100 (DDR266), 133MHz DDR, 2.1 GB/s
PC1600 (DDR200), 100MHz DDR, 1.6 GB/s
Your
motherboard's specifications will indicate the speed it wants for
the computer memory. Using a higher-rated computer memory chip will
work, but it won't operate at the higher speed, so it's merely a
waste of money. Double check before you buy that whether your motherboard
does support the speed of the computer memory you want.

RDRAM
RAMBUS
computer memory is used by some Intel systems starting around the
year 2000. These computer memory chips are called RIMMs and have
184 pins like DDR DIMMs, but are not compatible.
RAMBUS
computer memory was invented as a way to decrease the number of
wires needed on the motherboard to handle memory slots. While SDRAM
and DDR SDRAM type of computer memory use 64-bit data paths, RDRAM
computer memory interface is only 16 bits wide but runs at a higher
rate. When first introduced this computer memory was astoundingly
expensive - ten times more than regular memory - and benchmarks
showed it was actually slower in some cases. It certainly wasn't
as fast as it was supposed to be. Now, nearly four years later the
performance problems seem to have been ironed out. Still, even Intel
is pulling back from it, so this type of computer memory will probably
fade away except perhaps in specialty uses like video game consoles,
where the lower trace count of computer memory chips matters much
more.
RDRAM
computer memory chips comes in a number of different speeds:
PC1066,
533MHz DDR, 2.1 GB/s
PC800, 400MHz DDR, 1.6 GB/s
PC700, 350MHz DDR, 1.4 GB/s
PC600, 300MHz DDR, 1.2 GB/s
Your
motherboard's specifications will indicate the speed it wants for
the computer memory to operate at. Click

SDRAM computer memory
The
old standard, regular single-data-rate memory, a.k.a. PC66/PC100/PC133.
This type of computer memory was introduced around 1996 and is now
becoming obsolete. It comes in 168-pin DIMMs.
SDRAM
computer memory chips comes in a number of different speeds:
PC133,
133MHz, 1 GB/s
PC100, 100MHz, 800 MB/s
PC66, 66MHz, 533 MB/s
Your
motherboard's specification will indicate the speed it wants. Using
a higher-rated computer memory will work, but it won't operate at
the higher speed. I personally don't recommend buing this type of
computer memory chips nowadays because I've seen some DDR type computer
memory chips cheaper than this one.

4.
ECC
All
of these computer memory chips types come in ECC and non-ECC varieties.
ECC stands for Error Correcting Code, which means there's an extra
chip or two on each module to store check bits. ECC computer memory
chips can correct single-bit errors, and detect mode multiple-bit
errors. Not all motherboard chipsets implement ECC. If you put an
ECC computer memory chip into a motherboard which doesn't implement
ECC, the memory will work fine but will not correct errors. Don't
get confused with it because if the prices are much more in this
type of computer memory then don't consider this, this information
is given for readers advantage and this is not a major concern while
buying computer memory chips.
