Installing various drives

Our next step is installing stuff that goes in the drive bays. Most cases have several internal and external drive bays, in both 3.5" and 5.25" sizes into these bays. Before you start screwing stuff in, you'll want to remove the plastic covers from the front bezel of your computer anywhere that an external drive will go (Bezel is just a fancy word for the front cover that typically pops off the front of the case.). Then put the bezel back on, and put a CD-ROM, floppy or anything else in one of the holes. Make sure that the front of the drive is even with the bezel, and loosely screw it in place. Also, make sure that your chosen locations for your CD-ROM, DVD, hard drives, and floppy drives are good cabling capabilities. Don't put that DVD drive at the very top of the case unless your IDE cable can reach that far! Also, if you're installing a device that will live on an IDE chain, make sure to read the next section before sticking it in your case, since you might have to work some jumpers. It doesn't really matter whether you use the top or bottom set of holes on the drive, just use the same ones on both sides. You only need to put two screws on each side, so don't go mad and use all 4!

Now we move on to installing the hard disk.First, we need to ensure that the hard drive is set up to be the master drive on its IDE cable. Examine the top of your hard-drive. There should be a chart there depicting the necessary jumper settings to make the drive a master or slave device. Otherwise, the chart will be somewhere on the body of the drive. The set of jumpers will be on the back end of the drive. Ensure that they are set correctly to enable the drive as a master. You may need a set of tweezers to move the jumpers around.

This is the hard disk from the back the first arrow(moving from left to right)shows the connectors from which the IDE cable will be attached, second is the jumper which you will set to Master, third one is the power connector.

Hard Drives and Cables Attach the Molex power cable to the drive. Unlike the floppy drive power plug, these Molex connectors can only fit into the drive one way, so relax, you can't make a mistake here. Attach the Primary IDE cable to the drive (for any recent motherboard, this should be a 80 wire UDMA cable). It will be keyed to only fit in one way, but to make sure, the red or blue on the cable should be facing the hard-drive power cable. Attach the long end of the cable to the IDE 0 connector on the motherboard first, then if there are other drives attach those IDE cables to the IDE 1 connector.
